Path to Brodhead Service Program

Because of the virtual aspect of DukeEngage 2021, my internship was rather self-defined.

I encountered much freedom in terms of what my days could look like. Freedom to reach out to organizations across the country, freedom to work hours I felt comfortable with, freedom to explore different themes I was interested in, and more.

However, with this freedom came an overwhelming degree of uncertainty.

In what ways could I motivate and challenge myself?

Where could I find opportunities to connect with others in a virtual environment?

How could I make this summer fulfilling for me?

That freedom was a privilege during a time when uncertainty felt normal.

The growth and self-reflection I experience that summer encouraged me to pursue another summer committed to community work. After over 2 years in a global pandemic, I have had to re-define what civic engagement means to me.

What is my personal philosophy?

To me, civic engagement entails listening directly to the needs of my respective communities and acting accordingly. The parameters of my Brodhead project were defined in direct collaboration with my partners, and I centered community voices every step of the way.
