An "Independent" Project

The Importance of a Support Network

The thought of doing an independent project was intimidating at first. Even the application was daunting as I realized the level of depth, commitment, and self-accountability my project would require. However, I recognized that I was more than capable and excited for the opportunity to grow beyond my comfort zone.

It quickly became evident that my “independent project” was hardly independent considering all of the people who supported and encouraged my growth this summer. For example, as the student leader of this project, I was prepared to reach out to caregivers for interviews “independently”. However, without extensive communication with the Coping Together facilitators and my supervisors, I never would have gotten the level of participation and engagement that I did. What I may have thought was clear communication could not have been as effective without their input.

This was a significant learning moment for me that encouraged me to reevaluate my role as both a leader and teammate in diverse settings. In any project centered around civic engagement, it is critical to uplift community voices. However, engaging in this process first-hand showed me how effective leaning out and listening can truly be. Additionally, it was empowering and inspiring as I was consistently aligning my values, goals, and passions related to community-based work.
